Hi Fellows,

I am going to start my GMAT preparation and want to target the 2009 admission sessions. Can you give me some advice on how much time it should ideally take for preparing for the exam?

thanks
@simran,
thanks man! your 2 cents helped
could you also suggest what books should one start with while preparing for gmat?

@raman,
i didn't understand your point....with due respect to you, i think we should not take a negative view because we couldn't do well in exam the first time and plan for our second attempt...its like saying preparing for failure even before you start taking your first attempt

additional thought
do not want to discourage you but don't take too much time while preparing for the exam.....i prepared for 6 months which now i think was waste of time...bcoz i didn't get a good score

so there may be possibility that you may have to regive the same exam again...consider that time also.

My 2 cents
There are three parts to GMAT study according to me.

Part-I is where you do the basic stuff, familiarize yourself with trivial concepts, know more about the exam and practice on basic set of questions. This helps you develop a fundamental base so that you don't get the most easy questions wrong in the exam.

Part-II is moving on the slightly tougher questions and getting to know the most frequently tested concepts. You practice on medium level difficulty questions and learn more about your weaknesses in different areas.

Part-III is where you move on to more advanced concepts and even tougher questions. You also focus more on your weak areas that you identified in part-II.

Depending on time you spend, I think it usually takes between 2-4 months for an average person.

my info
Hey Friends,

Something more about me...I am currently working and so cannot devote too much time for stuyding...max 1-2 hours a day which i push upto 4-5 hours on a weekend. So I was kind of thinking when should I take the date for my exam.
I think 6 months is too long but again it would depend on person to person...any other ideas?

6 months
Sarthak, I think since you have enuf time you can prepare for 6 months and then give it a shot. I think 6 months will be more than sufficient for preparation and then practice mock exams. Good Luck!

share more info about you
Hey Sarthak, There is no one policy or time frame that will apply to all...different people have different caliber and resources at their disposal. So I guess you should share a little bit more about you...are you working/studying? how much score do you want to target...have you given any diagnostic tests...etc etc.
